OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA—May 30, 2017—Dunlap Codding is pleased to be ranked in Band 1 (the top band) for intellectual property by Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. The publication is widely regarded as the most reliable and intensively researched of all lawyer rating directories. Chambers USA began ranking Oklahoma Intellectual Property firms in 2010. Dunlap Codding has been a top-ranked firm since the inaugural coverage of the state’s intellectual property practitioners and is again ranked in Band 1 for 2017.

Chambers described the firm as a “Respected boutique with a global clientele, partnering with companies of all sizes to provide long-term strategic and holistic IP portfolio management. Particularly noted for its high level of patent prosecution activity and representation of clients seeking to protect IP assets in the healthcare, life sciences, engineering and entertainment sectors. Also active on licensing, trade secrets and rights of publicity issues. Sources report not only that ‘the team is good at achieving the desired results for the client,’ but also that it does so on a dependably consistent basis, one client stating: ‘Factors that influence our decision to engage Dunlap Codding include the long duration of the relationship, with a well-established history of positive results.’ Referees also cite the team’s ‘many years of experience in the IP sphere,’ characterizing it further as ‘very client-focused, practical and responsive.'”

According to Chambers, “Managing Director Nicholas Rouse takes the lead on mechanical engineering issues….He is described by one client as an attorney who is ‘well versed in the types of products invented at our company and extremely practical in his approach‘ and whose services are ‘in high demand.'”

Chambers noted that “Sources ‘think very highly‘ of Marc Brockhaus, the team’s head of electrical engineering and systems matters. Active on advisory, transactional and contentious issues, he is especially knowledgeable where computer-related and other technological issues are concerned and also heads the team advising…on the maintenance of… worldwide trademark portfolio[s].”

Chambers wrote, “Douglas Sorocco heads the practice, exercising a ‘very professional, cordial and cooperative‘ supervision of several of its key mandates, including the management of a wide range of patent and trademark issue….He offers particularly extensive expertise in the life sciences and wider technology spheres.”

Finally, describing Emily Campbell, Chambers said, “[Emily] lately headed the team advising…on a variety of trademark-related matters and the acquisition of domain names owned by third parties. She leads the practice’s trademark, copyright and e-commerce group and is praised by sources for her practicality and close focus on client requirements.”

Dunlap Codding Shareholder Emily Campbell Quoted in Law.Com
Posted Aug 16, 2016 at 10:35 am See More

Dunlap Codding Shareholder Emily Campbell was quoted in a Law.com article by Megan Spicer, published on July 29, 2016.  The article, “Copyright Counsel Eager for Clarity on Fair Use for Viral Videos,”  covered the fair use of viral videos, such as the cell phone video from the scene of the recent shooting in Dallas which claimed the lives of five police officers.

As Spicer noted, there are no cases dealing with the monetization of viral videos that depict serious news.   Emily Campbell, who heads the trademark and copyright group at Dunlap Codding asked, “Will someone challenge these groups who are monetizing viral videos?”  She said that companies such as ViralHog [one of the startup companies that acquire video and capitalize on its popularity] are taking advantage of the uncertainty.

Dunlap Codding Shareholder Emily Campbell was quoted in Inside Counsel in an article by Amanda Ciccatelli published on July 26, 2016.  The article, “Melania Trump vs. Michelle Obama:  Does copyright law cover public speeches,” commented on the reports that “Melania Trump’s speech was very similar to the speech previously given by Michelle Obama at the Democratic National Convention in 2008.”

Ciccatelli wrote, ” Does copyright law actually protect public speeches? The answer according to Campbell is yes.  Copyright law serves to protect various types of creative works, including speeches.”

“The nuance here, though, is that copyrights protect works only when they are ‘fixed in a tangible medium,” [Campbell] explained.  “So what’s really protected by copyright is not the act of giving the speech but the video recording, sound recording, or antecedent written text of the speech.”

Campbell also said, “Ultimately, the key questions to be answered are whether Melania Trump used enough of the speech to constitute infringement.”  She concluded by saying, “Be inspired by the works of others, but don’t copy them.  Don’t use the work of another—in whole or in part—without obtaining permission first.”

Instructions

Thank you for your interest in using our facilities at DC on Film Row. Please fill out the following form with as much information as possible. We will review all submissions and let you know if we need any additional information. We reserve the sole right to determine who may be a guest in our facilities and the conditions/circumstances under which the space may be used. We are an all volunteer effort and it may take 1-2 days in which to respond. We take all requests in the order in which we receive them. So, although the calendar may indicate that a particular day/time is currently available there may be circumstances where we simply haven’t yet gotten to an earlier email requesting the use of the space. Please note that while the space and facilities are free to use, there is a $20/hr nonrefundable payment required to the person who hosts the space while it is in use. While we allow private parties when the space is available, our mission is to provide a space for community and nonprofit events first whenever possible. As such, beginning April 1st, we have instituted a couple of new procedures for private events such as baby showers, weddings, graduation ceremonies and the like:

  1. We will only book private events beginning in the month prior to the event. For example, if you wish to hold a baby shower on June 15th we would allow you to book the space no earlier than May 1st.
  2. The nonrefundable payment for your host must be made before the space will be “reserved” for your use. For example, if you wish to hold a baby shower on June 1st from 6pm to 11pm we would require the $100 payment ($20/hr for 5 hours) to be made at the time of booking or shortly thereafter in order to reserve the space. We will not hold or reserve the space for a private event until the host payment is complete. Please note that this is a nonrefundable payment–i.e., if the event is canceled the payment will not be refunded.
    • If the date for your event is available, we will contact you to obtain this nonrefundable payment. Please make certain that your contact information submitted is accurate and indicates the best email/number to reach you.
  3. The number of times any individual can reserve the space will be limited to once every six months.

While we do not wish to be overly formal with the requirements to use our facilities, our experience over the past 3 years has made it necessary to implement a few policies to better manage the space so everyone in our community has an opportunity to come together. Thanks!
