My favorite OKC event is this week, and so I wanted to share our organization’s press release! This event is near and dear to me as I’ve participated in the IgniteOKC Leadership Crew since 2012, served as the 2015 Event Chair, and currently serve as the 2015-2016 Board Chair of our first-ever and recently formed IgniteOKC Board. This year’s Board and Crew have demonstrated astounding growth and teamwork. I am extremely proud of our 2016 Event Chair, Steven Charles, and our 2015-2016 Board Chair-Elect, Regina Banks! Event to Showcase the Best Ideas in OKC in 5 Minutes and 20 Slides

IgniteOKC 9 will feature 12 speakers showcasing some of Oklahoma City’s best new ideas. 

IgniteOKC is set for Thursday, May 26, 2016, from 7-10 p.m. at the Lyric Theatre at The Plaza at 1727 NW 16th St. in Oklahoma City. Now in its ninth edition, IgniteOKC brings together techies, artists, entrepreneurs, academics, and others to share their ideas and insights in fast-paced, Pecha Kucha style presentations. Twelve presenters will each get five minutes to speak on the topic of their choice, as well as 20 slides that will automatically advance every 15 seconds – no matter what. 

“Our goal is to connect people of diverse backgrounds, share the sparks of big ideas, and ignite inspiration in Oklahoma City’s business and creative communities,” said Steven Charles, IgniteOKC event chair. “Our first IgniteOKC was held six years ago at Lyric at the Plaza, and we’re excited to be returning to this great venue and the thriving Plaza District.” 

Presentation topics include “Why Millennials are the next Y2K” with Travis Brown, Clayton Bahr’s talk on “How OKC is Turning the Tables on Hunger,” “Yes, Then How” by Laura Massenat, and more. For a complete list of presentation topics, visit

Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. for a networking hour featuring a cash bar and free appetizers. Elemental Coffee will also be there providing free coffee to everyone. Tickets, provided by Amplifan, are $15 each and can be purchased online at or at the door. Each ticket holder will automatically be entered for a chance to win various door prizes from local sponsors such as Allied Arts, Barre3, Udander, This Land Yoga, Arjaybi's Concepts, and more. Ticket holders are also invited to join us at Oak and Ore for one free beer courtesy of Anthem Brewing immediately following the event.

What is Ignite?

Started by Brady Forrest, Technology Evangelist for O’Reilly Media, and Bre Pettis of, formerly of MAKE Magazine, the first Ignite took place in Seattle in 2006. Since then, the event has become an international phenomenon, with hundreds of five-minute talks having been given all over the world.
