MECHANIZED DEATH: INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY STYLE

Kudos to John Farmer of the Leading-Edge Law Group PLC for his opinion piece in the April 26, 2004 edition of the Richmond Times-Dispatch.  John’s premise is quite simple – provide modern day companies intellectual property videos similar to the old high school driving movies (available for purchase here for all you sentimental fools) – with the new movies showing the death, carnage and mayham that results from poor patent, copyright and trademark planning, naturally.

John’s opinion stresses an important point: preplanning is essential to any company that develops or acquires intellectual property assets which, in this day and age, is every company.  Beginning with the basic premise of ownership:  who owns the intellectual property assets created by your employees (surprisingly to most businesses,  the employees do without an explicit assignment or provision in the employment agreement).  It is always better to plan ahead and spend a little time and money to make sure that the “killer app” that your employee has developed will actually benefit the company and not just the employee.
